The Secret to Mess-Free Period Sex

You're horny as hell, want to get busy, but you're on your period. Maybe you don't want to worry about leaving your mark on crisp, white bedding, or be confined to the contortions necessary for successful shower sex, occasionally distracted by your Aunt Flow as she trails down your leg, and down the drain. Maybe you're okay with some p-in-v action, but your partner shutters at going down on you. He doesn't want to earn his red wings, he says, and you understand. It's the way it is: your sex life will not exist, or exist on the most mediocre level possible for that one week of the month. But damn, does it have to be this way? This thought was in the back of my mind, one day while I was scrolling around Amazon, getting some odd-n-ends: toilet paper, notebooks, tampons... and came series of tampon alternatives that intrigued me. In the "recommended" section was something called a "soft cup." A type of menstrual cup.
Was it like one of those dome-like things you stick all-the-way-up your vagina, to then carefully maneuver out by the plastic part that acts as a grip, rinse, and re-maneuver back up? The idea of being in a public restroom stall, and relieving your red sea, or the inevitable Carrie-on-prom-night hands I'd have to hide on my way to the sink was beyond horrifying. And that's not even considering what I imagine it would be like during a potentially sexy encounter. "One sec," as you rush to the bathroom, pulling out the tiny basin by the pointy bottom, and bringing a towel to put underneath you for good measure. Then you lay there, afraid to move and make a mess. So sexy, right?
Back to my Amazon exploration: wtf is Instead? They're disposable menstrual cups that can be worn for up to 12 hours, and with a soft plastic piece to collect your flow instead of hard plastic, and CAN be worn during sex. I was skeptical, but tried them, and have since told all of my female friends. It's most effective with concealing lite to medium flows in their entirety, but can be effective with a heavy flow if put in just before sex to avoid leaking from build-up.
You don't have to cuddle with a bulky pad between you and your boo (that middle spoon wasn't invited!), get busy with your Aunt Flow all-up-in-your business and your partner's, or opt for nun status during that-time-of-the month. Another disposable menstrual cup to try, San Francisco-based FLEX, which are now available for pre-order. Cheers to mess-free period sex!
