In Liberia, an American missionary doctor is fighting for his life against Ebola.
Kent Brantly is an inspiration for his strength and resolve in his mission, while trying to help stop an incurable disease. He selflessly put himself in danger for the benefit of others, and his faith remains unwavering as he faces the very real possibility of death.
Kent, 33 and married with two children, is a missionary doctor from Fort Worth, Texas. He has been in Africa as part of a fellowship with the Christian aid group Samaritan’s Purse. He has been working as a medical director at a mission hospital’s Ebola clinic in Monrovia, Liberia.
He knew the risks involved with working in a poor country, and chose to devote his life to medical missionary, according to his mother, Jan Brantly.
Despite following safety protocol, Kent tested positive for the virus that has no known cure.
“God’s going to deliver me from this but even if he doesn’t I have lived my life for him,” Kent told an elder from his Fort Worth Church, according to the Daily Mail. “And I have no regrets.”
“He placed his life in the hand of a loving God and our love in that God sustains us,” said his mother.
At least four countries in the region of West Africa are suffering from an epidemic of the deadly Ebola virus. The infection kills most of its victims and has already claimed the life of a top Ebola doctor in Sierra Leone. Nearly 700 people in West Africa have succumbed to infections in this current outbreak.
Impacted countries in West Africa so far include Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leon, and Nigeria.
Another American doctor in Liberia, Nancy Writebol, has also reportedly been diagnosed with Ebola.
Ebola spreads through contact with bodily fluids. Symptoms of Ebola include fever and sore throat, which escalate to vomiting, bleeding internally and externally, and diarrhea. It can go undetected for weeks
