Kaylen Woodard, a 6 year-old living in Chicago, is being hailed as a hero after saving a friend from an attempted kidnapping when he could have run away just as easily.
Woodard and his 10 year-old neighbor, named Marcy, were playing in front of their homes, not 20 feet from their front doors, when a man approached them and began to snatch Marcy away. The kidnapper didn’t plan for Woodard’s wily bravery, which ultimately saved his friend.
“He tried to hold her mouth… The only way she got away is because I kicked him in the back of the leg and the outside of his leg,” Woodard told WLS-TV.
The man had already fled the scene by the time Marcy’s mother ran outside from her home after hearing the commotion. She called Woodard “our little hero.” For her part, Woodard’s mother Diana Blakely expressed her pride that her son managed to stop what might have been a devastating crime.
“I’m very proud of him,” Blakely said. “I can’t stop talking about him. I’m still in a state of shock by him being so young and he did that for a friend. That’s amazing.”
The would-be kidnapper was described as a white or Hispanic between 18 and 20 years-old driving a white convertible with red seats. Police issued a warning to residents of the neighboring areas following the incident, but no sign of him has turned up as of yet.
