Before the final result of the election was declared, Jonathan placed a historical call to Buhari to congratulate him on his victory. Jonathan who contested on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party lost the election to Muhammadu Buhari of the All progressives Congress. “By being the first elected Nigerian leader to willingly hand over power via the ballot box, to the opposition party, without contesting the election outcome, I proved to the ordinary man or woman in the country that I was his or her equal.” President Buhari has also reiterated how shocked he was when Jonathan conceded defeat and has applauded the gesture
The president: “When he made that famous call at 4:45 pm and said ‘Good evening Mr. President, I have called to congratulate you and I concede defeat’, I was silent for quite a while because I was surprised and he said ‘did you hear me?’”. “Abdulsalam recognized the generosity of Jonathan to concede defeat and said we should go and thank him immediately and that was the first time I came here (State House).”
Jonathan revealed that the reason he conceded defeat was because he needed to check his ambition, as the consequences of not doing so may have been dire not only for Nigeria, but for Africa. “Democracy has to be nurtured to grow. Strong democratic institutions are the backbone and future of our democracy. They must be protected and nurtured. As for me, as a matter of principle, it is always the nation first,”
